A somatic approach to staying grounded—even when everything feels like too much

For the second post today, I invite you to check in with your environment first.  Do you have 3 minutes to read something and 10 minutes to do something that will help you?  You’re well worth it, I know it.  If you think you’ll be interrupted in the next 13 or so minutes, read this now and get as far as you can.  Remember, somatic tools don’t work just for people who “believe” in them…  they work for people who DO them. So read on, or if you’re pressed for time, just scroll down and schedule a fulfillment assessment to find that clarity you’ve been looking for.

You’re juggling deadlines, decision fatigue is creeping in, and even the smallest request feels like the final straw. Your shoulders are up to your ears, your breath is shallow, and no matter how many times your calendar tells you it is time to do something for yourself, you ignore it (if you’ve even scheduled time for yourself!  Do that first!).

When stress hits like that, your nervous system takes the wheel.

But here’s the good news: You can shift your state—not someday, but in 10 minutes or less—by working with your body, not just your thoughts.

Your Body Isn’t the Problem. It’s the Portal.

Most of us try to think our way out of stress.
But stress isn’t just a mindset—it’s a state. A physiological one.

When your nervous system perceives pressure, it mobilizes you into one of four survival patterns: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These reactions are fast, automatic, and often invisible until you’re in the middle of them—snapping at someone, shutting down, or spinning in overwhelm.

That’s where somatic tools come in. Somatic coaching teaches you how to read and regulate your own nervous system so you can respond instead of react.

The Cost of Staying Stuck in Stress Mode

If you’re a leader, entrepreneur, or high performer, you probably know how to function under stress. But that doesn’t mean it’s sustainable—or healthy.

Here’s what chronic stress often looks like in disguise:

  • Overworking to prove you’re capable

  • Withdrawing from team dynamics to avoid conflict

  • Saying “yes” to avoid disappointing others

  • Losing your creativity and clarity in moments you need it most

Over time, this isn’t just exhausting—it becomes your default mode.
And no strategy works when your body feels unsafe.

A 10-Minute Somatic Reset You Can Use Today

Here’s a simple somatic sequence you can try right now to shift from stressed to calm:

1. Ground
Let yourself feel the support of the chair under you or your feet on the floor. Get curious: Where does my body feel most supported right now?

2. Breathe
Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, and exhale through your mouth for a count of 8. Repeat this for 1–2 minutes. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the one that says “you’re safe”).

3. Sense
Notice 3 physical sensations. For example: “cool air on my cheek,” “tightness in my chest,” “tingling in my hands.” Stay descriptive, not judgmental.

4. Move
Let your spine gently twist, sway, or stretch. Movement tells your nervous system that you’re not frozen—you’re present and capable.

These micro-adjustments may seem small, but they are deeply powerful. They speak the body’s language. I’ve heard some wisdom: that amateurs practice until they get it right, but pros practice until they can’t get it wrong… I want to be a pro, do you? Practice makes it easy.

It’s Not About Doing Less. It’s About Feeling More Resourced.

You don’t need to be calmer by willpower. You need a system for staying regulated and fulfilled—especially in the middle of chaos.

That’s why I created the Fulfillment Assessment. It’s a free 1:1 session that looks at:

  • Where stress is stored in your leadership habits

  • How your nervous system is shaping your energy and decisions

  • What’s missing between your goals and your felt sense of satisfaction

If you’re feeling stuck, scattered, or just plain worn out… this is your next step.
